If you’re a Bollywood fanatic and love action movies, you probably know that iconic scene from Dhurandhar where Ranveer Singh lights up a cigarette after a massive fight using a matchbox tucked under his shoe. As cool as that scene was, a lot of netizens believe it became the inspiration behind one of the coolest sneakers to come out of an Indian homegrown brand, Comet.

Their Macchis collection features a match strike strip hidden on the back of the shoe, cleverly camouflaged into the design. Now, I don’t smoke, nor do I condone smoking, but I have to admit, this is one of the coolest product innovations I’ve seen in a while. As someone who shops a little too much, I love when the things I buy have an interactive element that makes them feel more valuable. It adds to the experience, makes the product more memorable, and honestly just makes buying it a lot more satisfying, which is exactly what Comet is trying to do with this collection.

Will most of us ever use the striker to light anything? Probably not. But is it fun knowing you can? Absolutely. It’s one of those little details that makes you stop, grab a matchstick just to see if it actually works, and suddenly you’ve got a story to tell. Sometimes that’s all a product needs, a small moment that makes it stand out from every other sneaker sitting in your wardrobe.

What made me appreciate this collection even more was how it sits at the intersection of innovation and nostalgia. We all know how iconic vintage Indian matchboxes were, with their quirky illustrations and bold colours that made them collectibles long before collecting things became cool. And if there’s one thing this generation loves, it’s bringing old-school aesthetics back into everyday life. Whether it’s a gramophone sitting in your living room, a typewriter that somehow still gets used, or old film cameras, we’ve all become a little obsessed with nostalgia. Comet tapped into that perfectly by taking inspiration from matchbox designs from the 1920s and turning them into something you can actually wear, while sneaking in an interactive feature that feels fun rather than gimmicky.

But that’s just one collection. They also launched an orange-inspired sneaker that literally peels like an orange. It arrives looking almost completely white with tiny hints of orange, and you’re given a small cutter to scrape away the outer layer yourself, revealing bright orange textured detailing underneath. It’s such a simple idea, but the execution is brilliant, and the attention to detail makes the entire unboxing feel like part of the product.

Innovations like these genuinely make me feel like fashion is moving towards becoming more interactive. We’re slowly moving away from buying things just to wear them and towards buying things that give us an experience. This generation has spending power, but we also want products that surprise us, make us curious, and give us that little wow moment. A sneaker isn’t just a sneaker anymore. It’s the story behind it, the details, the experience of owning it, and everything that comes with it.

Comet has a lot of other equally creative collections, but what they’re doing in this interactive space is what excites me the most. They’ve built a brand that gets people talking because their products don’t just look good, they give you something to do, something to discover, and that’s exactly why I’m so excited to see what they come up with next.

P.S. This is not a sponsored post… although I never stop manifesting.
